Closed by public demand! The Rancho Seco nuclear power station near Sacramento in California has been owned by the publicly-controlled Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). In 1989 local voters elected to close the plant, a nuclear twin of fated Three Mile Island. SMUD subsequently built this photovoltaic solar generating plant next to the closed nuclear facility.
