Red Road flats, Glasgow Built in 1965, this 32-storey housing development, designed by architect Sam Brunton, was once the tallest in Europe - a symbol of the optimism invested in a high-rise future. Yet by 1980 mounting problems had resulted in two of the blocks being condemned as unfit for human habitation.
