Red Road flats, Glasgow

Built in 1965, this 32-storey housing development, designed by architect Sam Brunton, was once the tallest in Europe - a symbol of the optimism invested in a high-rise future. Yet by 1980 mounting problems had resulted in two of the blocks being condemned as unfit for human habitation. In March 2005 the council announced plans to demolish them and redevelop the area with low-rise houses.
