Solar
Electric Generating System, California.
California’s
Mojave Desert provides an ideal location for this vast solar
power complex based upon parabolic trough solar collectors.
Each collector, which tilts to follow the sun, comprises a mirror
which reflects sunlight onto a steel tube containing a heat
transfer fluid. The fluid, heated up to 390°C, is pumped
through heat exchangers to raise steam, power turbines and generate
up to 150 MW of electricity - displacing the need for almost
1 million barrels of oil.
